I think we as a collective rock community can all agree that we love that Alex Van Halen is not done with music, and now his future project with Steve Lukather will also bring some un-released Van Halen songs as well!
"Ed and I had a lot of stuff that we made, that we made musically that we never let go. Many people have asked, what about releasing unreleased stuff? Well, we're not gonna release it in its embryonic form because it wouldn't make any sense. But I've been fortunate enough to have Steve Lukather, who was a good friend of Ed's, and we're working on putting a record together, but it has to be of the quality and the level of where we left it. Not just to say, 'Hey, here's some music that we made. If you like it, that's great.' No. It has to be the quality that we expect."
When promoting his book, Alex did put out some of the music he and Ed were working on before he passed, but even those were raw tracks of what they were planning, now that he and Steve are working together, maybe we get some unreleased Toto tracks that give Alex a shot at playing some classic Jeff Porcaro beats.
Alex Van Halen announced his comeback to music with Toto founder Steve Lukather last year.
"I'm getting ready to do this record with Lukather and a couple of other people," Van Halen said to Iron Maiden’s Nicko McBrain on his podcast Metal Sticks.
Lukather, is famous for his ability to collaborate with just about anybody, as he’s been a part of countless classics throughout music history, including and not to be undersold his work with Toto. Steve even worked with the late great Edward Van Halen himself on Michael Jackson’s “Beat It”, which is leading some to speculate that Alex is referring to the completing of unreleased music featuring himself and Ed, before his passing in 2020.
It has been revealed that Van Halen had albums' worth of unheard music,
"They will stay there until we figure out how and why and what to do with them," he told Chris Jericho on his podcast. "And again, you have to remember, it has to be on the level of where Ed and I, where we used to play. We're not just gonna shovel it in. We have access to some of the greatest musicians on the planet, and a lot of 'em are more than willing to take a chance on some of the stuff."
