Demolition on Arco Arena (Sleep Train Arena) has begun.
The arena originally opened in November of 1988, known as ARCO Arena until 2011. We don't talk about it's brief stint at PBP, and in 2012 it became Sleep Train Arena, as it is known today. It was home to the Sacramento Kings from 1988-2016 (as well as the Sacramento Monarchs from 1997-2009). The plan is to demolish the area and repurpose the land in what is known as the Innovation Park Project. We can expect to the land transformed into residential, commercial and retail real estate; as well as transformed into restaurants, parks, bike trails, a medical school and a teaching hospital. The Natomas Unified School District plans to purchase 12 acres (to the tune of $6 million) for a new school focusing on STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).
