Colin Kaepernick Creates Fund To Hire Lawyers For George Floyd Protesters

Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has created a fund to pay for defense lawyers who will represent people arrested in Minneapolis during protests over the death in police custody of George Floyd. The fund is an offshoot of Kaepernick's "Know Your Rights Camp", which was established to teach minority kids in America about their constitutional rights, especially when they come in contact with law enforcement. Kaepernick's website shows that camps have been held in Atlanta, Baltimore, Miami, New Orleans, New York City, Oakland, and even in Amsterdam.

On Friday he tweeted that the fund is needed to "protect our Freedom Fighters."

A day earlier he posted another tweet in which he said, "When civility leads to death, revolting is the only logical reaction." He also said, "We have a right to fight back."

Protests have turned into riots in several American cities, including Minneapolis, after Floyd died following an attempt to arrest him for allegedly using counterfeit money at a store. Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who was seen in video shared on social media with his knee on Floyd's neck for several minutes, was quickly fired along with three other officer with him at the time. On Friday, Chauvin was arrested and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter.
