California Considers Statewide Ban On Gas-Powered Garden Tools

Californians might be forced to give up their gas-powered lawn and gardening tools. That's because lawmakers are considering a statewide ban on the equipment in an effort to curb air pollution. State regulators said they're concerned about the impact these tools have on the air we breath, and they note that at least 60 California cities have already placed a ban of some sort on the gas-powered tools.

According to the California Air Resources Board, running a gas-powered lawnmower for an hour will produce the same amount of air pollution as a Toyota Camry driving from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, and state officials estimate that there are millions more gasoline engines powering lawnmowers, trimmers, leaf blowers, and more, than there are standard passenger cars on the road.

CARB has established a goal of reducing smog from these machines by 80 percent not later than 2031.
