Sacramento PD Changes Foot Pursuit Policies

The Sacramento Police Department announced a new policy regarding officer-involved foot pursuits on Monday.

The changes come four months after the controversial death of 22-year-old Stephon Clark, who was killed by police during a chase in March.

Updated policies, which went into effect on July 26, have been put in place to discourage foot pursuits in situations deemed risky.

Officers will now have to consider their own safety, as well as the community's before and during a chase and evaluate the arrest's overall importance.

They must also identify themselves as member's of the police force to any suspects they chase and turn on body cameras as soon as a pursuit begins.

When all is said and done, officers are required to give details for the video that include why the foot pursuit was necessary.
