New Year's resolutions are notoriously hard to stick to. Many people begin the year with optimistic expectations but soon get caught up in the whirlwind of everyday life and its responsibilities.

More than 7 in 10 people admit that they have failed to stay faithful to their past New Year's resolution.

There are plenty of reasons for this but a new WalletHub study suggests that where you live may be setting you up for failure or success.

Their most recent study determined where Americans are most likely to stick to their resolutions and goals for 2021.

Their findings resulted in a ranked list of over 180 U.S. cities based on their "conduciveness to self-improvement."

According to the study, Irvine is the best California city, and the fourth-best city in America, when it comes to keeping their New Year's resolutions.

San Diego (No. 5), San Francisco (No. 7), Fremont (No. 8), and San Jose (No. 10) were the California cities that rounded out the list of top 10 cities for reaching their New Year's goals.

The city of Sacramento came in at a neutral no. 47.

Some of the worst California cities for goals and resolutions were San Bernardino (No. 175), Stockton (No. 156), Moreno Valley (No. 150), and Fresno (No. 139).

Out of the entire United States, the study found that Scottsdale, Arizona was the best city for keeping New Year's resolutions.

To determine the best and worst cities, WalletHub compared 182 cities across statistics like the percentage of adults not exercising, median annual income, the prevalence of adult binge drinking, and other data that related to people's most common New Year's resolutions.
