Released on this day in 1975, Young Americans is the 9th studio album by David Bowie. Trading glam for 'plastic soul,' Bowie described the album as “the squashed remains of ethnic music as it survives in the age of Muzak rock, written and sung by a white limey.” Featuring songs like “Fame” (a collaboration with John Lennon and Bowie’s first No. 1 single in the US) and the title track, the album would sell over a half-million copies and land in the Top Ten. Backing vocals on several songs were handled by a young Luther Vandros and this album also sparked the start of a long collaboration with guitarist Carlos Alomar.
