On This Day In 1991 Nirvana Said 'Nevermind' To Rock History

Released on this day in 1991, Nevermind is the second studio album by Nirvana. The album was not only a surprise breakout success, peaking at number one on the US Billboard 100, replacing Michael Jackson's Dangerous, the album has been credited with changing the course of rock history. The lead single "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was a #1 hit at Alternative radio and a top 6 hit on the pop charts, and spawned an entire crop of soundalikes and a new genre labeled "grunge rock." Three other successful singles were released from the album: "Come as You Are", "Lithium", and "In Bloom" which helped the album sell approximately 300,000 copies a week at its peak. In the years since, Nevermind has sold over 30 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time. In 2005, the Library of Congress added Nevermind to the National Recording Registry, which collects "culturally, historically or aesthetically important" sound recordings.
