Nirvana Played Their First Concert With Dave Grohl On This Date In Rock

On this date in 1990, Nirvana played its first gig with their new drummer, Dave Grohl.

It was at the Northshore Surf Club in Olympia Washington. Five drummers and several band names later. But this was the guy.

Melvins’ frontman Buzz Osborne, invited Nirvana’s singer-guitarist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic to check out a Scream show in San Francisco a few months earlier. Cobain said, ‘That’s the kind of drummer we need.’ Dave had tremendous energy and that was very appealing. Grohl’s band broke up a little while later, and Nirvana decided to join forces.

Grohl said he was never officially told he was a member of the band, they just kept going…and he thought he was in the band because of his background vocal ability.

Novoselic said, "We knew within two minutes that he was the right drummer. He was a hard hitter. He was really dynamic. He was so bright, so hot, so vital. He rocked." It was just a year later when Nirvana would change the way rock and alternative sounded with the classic Nevermind album.
