The Race For California Governor Tightens In New Poll

Democrat Antonio Villaraigosa is just points behind Gavin Newsom in California's race for governor, according to a new survey done by Public Policy Institute of California.

The poll found that Newsom, who is currently serving as the state's lieutenant governor, is at 23 percent while Villaraigosa, who was the mayor of Los Angeles from 2005 until 2013, is at 21 percent.

Although the nonprofit's results have had the politicians in close range of each other in previous surveys, public and private polls done by groups at UC Berkeley’s Institute of Governmental Studies and USC Dornsife have shown Newsom leading by up to 10 points.

Republican John Cox was in third place at 9 percent followed by Democrat John Chiang, Republican Travis Allen, Democrat Delaine Eastin and Republican Doug Ose, according to the PPIC study released Wednesday.
