Local Hiker Falls 100 Feet Down Sierra Nevada Cliff

A hiker died after falling down a 100-foot cliff in the Sierra Nevada mountains, according to authorities.

After receiving reports that three hikers were stranded on Wednesday night, search and rescue teams skied to Granite Chief, a 9,000-foot mountain near Olympic Village, to attempt to save them.

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office said one hiker fell roughly 100 feet before help arrived. The two others were rescued and did not appear to be injured.

The hiker who died has only been identified by police as a Truckee resident as of Thursday morning.
