Although these twins in California were born just 15 minutes apart, they were born in different years.
According to NBC News, Alfredo Antonio Trujillo arrived at 11:45 P.M. on December 31, 2021, and his twin sister, Aylin Yolanda Trujillo arrived at 12:00 A.M. on January 1, 2022.
Aylin was the first baby to be born in 2022 at Natividad Medical Center and in Monterey County, according to a statement the hospital released.
"What makes their birth so rare is that they were born on different days, months, and years," the hospital said.
The probability of a pair of twins being born in different years is estimated to be 1 in 2 million. The chances are slim, but it has happened before this.
Two years ago, a couple in Indiana had twins that arrived in different decades. One baby arrived on December 31, 2019, and the other on January 1, 2020, reports NBC.
“It’s crazy to me that they are twins and have different birthdays,” said Fatima Madrigal, the Trujillo twins' mother. “I was surprised and happy that she arrived at midnight.”
Dr. Ana Abril Arias, who delivered the twins, said it was "one of the most memorable" deliveries of her career.
“It was an absolute pleasure to help these little ones arrive here safely in 2021 and 2022," she said. "What an amazing way to start the New Year!"
