Underage Scooting Prompts Sacramento To Consider New E-Scooter Regulations

E-scooters are common in most downtown areas including Sacramento. However, many might not know the rules and regulations when it comes to renting e-scooters.

That's why law enforcement agencies are trying to educate riders on laws that help ensure safety, according to CBS13.

California state law says the speed limit is 15 miles per hour for people riding a scooter and anyone under the age of 18 is required to wear a helmet.

A Class C driver's license is also needed to operate an e-scooter.

These rules are not widely known by people who casually rent them.

"I had no idea," one rider named Jay admitted to CBS13. "It’s literally put your debit information in and you’re good to go."

The lack of awareness around these laws is probably why the amount of underage riders is increasing around Sacramento.

In an attempt to curb underage riding, the City of Sacramento is considering revising their own local laws in June, reports CBS13.

These revisions may include additions such as riders needing to scan their driver's license before riding an e-scooter.

The city may also increase awareness of these regulations through push notifications.

Furthermore, the city could also consider penalties for riders who allow others to use their account, but that would be up to the Sacramento Police Department to enforce.

The City of Sacramento holds a free 'Urban Cycling and Scooting 101' class for the public once a month.
