A middle school in California is in hot water for a mix-up that's making national headlines.
Officials at New Vista Middle School thought they had a brilliant idea when they printed the phone number to a suicide prevention line on the back of every student's ID card. The National Suicide Prevention hotline offers crisis counselors 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It's free, confidential, and can save lives. So their hearts were in the right place when they tried to make sure every student knew the number (which, by the way, is 1-800-273-8255.)
However, someone goofed in a BIG way! The number listed on the cards was not the National Suicide Prevention hotline, and when one student tried to call the number they were greeted by a phone sex hotline!
The school district says the phone number printed on the card had two numbers switched, causing the mixup. OOPS!
Again... Just because it's good to know and good to share, the CORRECT Suicide Prevention Hotline number is 1-800-273-8255.
