The University of California system paid out $11 billion in salaries last year, so who took home the biggest checks?

The coaches.

Steve Alford with UCLA basketball, tops last year's payroll list at $2.6 million and Jeff Tedford is second with $2.4 million. That figure, a buyout, he was fired from Berkeley.

Systemwide, 19 professors made more than $1 million, all of them connected to campus medical schools or centers.

On average, salaries went up 4 percent across 100,000 employees.

The president's office says that's necessary to keep the most qualified candidates. And they're actually behind market rate.
