An increase in charging stations could bring more electric vehicles to the area.

Last week, West Sacramento unveiled its first public charging station for electirc vehicles, brining the total in the region to about 250 -- a number that has doubled over the last year.

"That first step is important because it signals to people that it is viable to drive electric. They can make a commute. It basically doubles the range of the car," Richard Loethal with ChargePoint said.

ChargePoint is the manufacturer of the terminal in West Sacramento.

He says most cities have a "chicken and egg problem" and need to give consumers confidence that if they buy electric vehicles they'll be able to charge them for commutes.
