A house fire has claimed the lives of two women in Placerville.

The call came in at 5:46 a.m., according to Division Chief Tim Cordero with El Dorado County Fire.

Cordero says his crews found the home near Mosquito Road and Rose Lane about 80 percent consumed by flames. The victims were reportedly found dead in a back bedroom.

"It was a larger property. There are quite a few domestic animals on the property -- donkeys, mules, I believe some goats," Coredo said.

None of those animals were harmed. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. It's not known if there were working smoke detectors.

The home is a total loss.
