Another local icon has fallen. Activist, artist and Sacramento Poet Laureate Jose Montoya has died.

County Supervisor Phil Serna reflected on the passing of Jose Montoya.
"I think like so many others that grew up in Sacramento, we knew Jose Montoya not just as an integral part of the Royal Chicano Air Force artist collective, but someone that was equally invested in his community," Serna said.

Montoya taught art at Sac State for 27 years and was founder of the schools Barrio Arts program. Montoya was a native of New Mexico and grew up in the farm fields of the Central Valley working alongside family members.  Montoya was 81.
