SAN FRANCISCO -- The Western span of the Bay Bridge is now the "Willie L. Brown, Jr." Bridge.

Despite the objections of Governor Jerry Brown, legislators are moving ahead with renaming the span between Treasure Island and San Francisco after the former mayor and longtime Assembly Speaker.

Opponents call it inappropriate, especially considering that Brown is still very much alive. Brown was the Assembly's first black speaker and the longest-serving one in state history. He remains a major force in local and state politics, and writes a regular Sunday column for the "San Francisco Chronicle."
