The Fairfield Police Department is investigating an officer involved shooting that closed State Route 12 Tuesday. 

The incident began at 9:34 a.m. when Fairfield Police got a disturbance call at an apartment complex in the 200 block of Pennsylvania Avenue.

When they got on scene, they saw an unidentified female victim suffering from major traumatic injuries.

Officers saw the suspect, who was armed with a knife and fled on foot. They tried to subdue him but police said the man came after officers with a knife. Officers then shot the suspect.

The suspect is hospitalized. The victim has life-threatening injuries, but no officers were injured. 

The highway is reopened shortly before 5pm.
