Many people will be going to enjoy the regular attractions at the State Fair tomorrow, but one popular exhibit will be missing this year.

The State Fair is reportedly opting out of their popular piglet exhibit over concerns of a viral epidemic that's affected thousands of farms and killed millions of pigs across the country.

The Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus -- or PED for short -- infects the cells lining the small intestine of pigs, causing severe diarrhea and dehydration and usually killing newborn piglets within 5-to-10 days of contracting it.

County and state fairs across the nation -- including Cal Expo -- are taking extra precautions.

Veterinarians are stepping up their inspections of adult pigs with daily screenings.

The PED virus is usually spread through fecal matter and cannot be transmitted to humans or other species, so there will be plenty of other baby barnyard animals for people to enjoy.
