The bicycle lane on the new Bay Bridge has been named in honor of a bike advocate who died of injuries he suffered during a fall while riding on the old span. Alex Zuckermann, was the founder of the East Bay Bicycle Coalition and the man credited for persuading Caltrans to build the path. He was also a former Oakland City planner. Zuckerman was 86 when he died in 2007 of injuries sustained while riding his bike with Caltrans officials when the bridge was closed for seismic work.
