SACRAMENTO -- California's Labor Secretary puts his foot down, ordering unemployment payments to get under way immediately.

Employment Development Department spokeswoman Loree Levy says the delay in payments was putting recipients in dire straits.

"This latest move was certainly one alternative that we had presented, and it will allow us to issue payment and complete the eligibility review at a later date. And really it's a matter of we just couldn't wait any longer to pay some of these claims," Levy said.

The EDD has been working almost around the clock since a computer glitch during a software upgrade caused a back up in payments being processed.
