SACRAMENTO -- Governor Brown signs legislation extending family leave to include caring for family members who've taken seriously ill.

The current law only covered leave to care for a parent, child, spouse, or registered domestic partner.

Employees could not receive benefits to care for an ill sibling, grandparent, grandchild, or in-law.

Senate Bill 770, sponsored by Santa Barbara democrat Hannah-Beth Jackson, expands the definition of family to more accurately reflect the caregiving responsibilities of California families.

California has the second-highest percentage of multi-generational households in the country. In signing the bill, Governor Jerry Brown, approved of SB770 not adding additional costs to employers or business. The law will take effect in July of next year.
