The Food and Drug Administration is taking steps to remove trans fats from the nation's food supply. FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg announced today the agency will begin a 60-day public comment period as the first step in the process.

She said studies show there is really no safe level of consumption of trans fat.

The CDC estimates thousands of Americans die each year because of heart disease linked to artificial trans fat.

Partially hydrogenated oils which are the source of trans fats are used in many processed foods ranging from frozen pizzas to coffee creamers and microwave popcorn.
