Fix 50 crews say they're now ahead of schedule, and that means some big changes for Friday's commute.

At their last update things were right on track, but now Caltrans says they will enter Eastbound Phase 2 five days early.

"I think a lot of that had to do with the curing of the concrete," Caltrans spokesman Dennis Keaton said.

The early completion of Phase 1 means an early start for Eastbound Phase 2 work on the outside lanes.

The lanes that are currently closed will re-open to traffic.

The two lanes currently open on Eastbound Highway 50 will be closed, and so will some ramps.

The connector ramps to southbound Highway 99 and eastbound Business 80 will be closed throughout the project. Also to close, the 11th Street and 16th Steet on-ramps.

Drivers are being encouraged to use Howe Avenue and Hornet Drive as a detour. Signs will be posted in the area. Learn more about the detour.

The new eastbound work is expected to take 15 days.

Westbound construction won't begin until after Memorial Day.
