The disconnect between Latinos and the Republican Party can be traced to anti-immigrant legislation in California, according to a new report.
Republicans have yet to overcome bad feelings created by Proposition 187 passed in the 90s.

Even though the law was gutted by constitutional challenges, a report by Latino Decisions suggests 187 was the beginning of groundswell of Latino political activism which diminished the Republican Party and gave the Democrats control of the state -- the report noting 70 percent of Latino voters are Democrats.

Now, some Republicans say the party should take the lead on immigration reform to win back Latino voters.
