This weeks is is mental illness awareness week.

Locally, Sacramento County Health says more than 350,000 people in the county live with mental illness.

Unfortunately only one-third will seek professional help primarily due to the stigma and discrimination surrounding mental illness.

To change that, Sacramento County is taking part in a series of events aimed at helping people understand the challenges faced by people with mental illness.

On Thursday, Elk Grove Mayor Gary Davis will join with speakers from the Stop Stigma Sacramento Speakers Bureau for a public discussion on mental illness.

Sacramento County also offers services and program for people and families dealing with mental illness.
