California Students made major gains in national test scores this year:.

"There was some very good news for California students in grade 8 reading where we saw a seven point improvement between 2011 and 2013 -- the largest we've seen in California going back to the '90s," Jack Buckley with the National Center of Educational Statistics said.

Buckley says eighth graders also improved an average of three points on math tests. Fourth grade reading scores were up 2 points, while their math scores were relatively unchanged.

Even with the improvements, California's test scores remain below the national average.
