State leaders want to make it easier for residents to see what they are paying in sales tax on purchases.

The new Board of Equalization website allows users to type in an address and instantly learn what the sales tax is for that location.

California has a seven-point-five percent statewide retail sales tax, but other municipalities add surtaxes for a variety of reasons, meaning a new purchase could be more expensive just a few blocks away.

Supporters of the website say it will also help retailers know what they should be charging for certain items.
