Police say the effort to stop drunk driving over the holidays resulted in a lot of arrests.  Hundreds of people ended up in the back of a police cruiser for DUI from the middle of December through New Year's Day,

"We had 414 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or combination." said Officer Andrew Bates with the Sacramento County DUI campaign.

He added that that's up from 375 in 2012, but we did have an extra day for the holidays this year.  Officer Bates thinks people are getting a clue about drunk driving...

"For the most part, people who designate a driver and plan ahead for a safe way home are not the people we end up arresting," he surmised.

There were two Sacramento County winter holiday DUI fatals in 2012, this year one possible death is under investigation.
