The new eastern span of the Bay Bridge will not open over Labor Day weekend as previously scheduled and it's possible it won't open until December.

State lawmakers were informed of that decision today by the group overseeing construction of the span.

The committee made its decision after the contractor said that the work needed to secure the bridge where 32 steel rods failed will take until mid-December.

A report on the bridge's steel rods concludes that CalTrans, the designer, and contractor are all responsible for the failure of those rods.
