Single-use plastic bags are officially banned in the city of Los Angeles. In a final vote, city council members approved the ordinance today, which will prohibit stores from distributing plastic bags. The ban takes effect the first day of January 2014 for large stores and July 1st for smaller stores. Stores who violate the ban could be fined up to $500 dollars. Other cities in the area with similar bans include Santa Monica, West Hollywood, and Laguna Beach.
