The African Union is suspending Egypt from the organization's activities following the overthrow of Egyptian President Mohammed Mursi.

Egypt's army removed Mursi from power earlier this week. Suspending a member nation is the action usually taken by the African Union when a country's constitutional rule is interrupted.

The military commanders say their goal is to reunify Egypt after millions took to the streets to protest against Mursi's rule and worsening economic conditions.
